Prepare before you try to help.

Most harm from youth volunteering is not malice. It is arriving without a task, a supervisor, or a way to leave quietly. volunteer& asks students to prepare on paper before they prepare a suitcase.

Build a cause brief.

One page. Name the issue, the place or community in general terms, the historical or present context, a verified organisation or teacher contact, the student role, and the definition of done. If you cannot fill those lines, you are not ready to recruit friends.

Prepare skills that travel.

• Listening and note-taking without turning people into quotes for Instagram.
• First aid only if you are actually trained and invited to use it.
• Language basics and the humility to work through an interpreter.
• Money handling and a written rule for who can spend.
• Image consent: when not to take a picture at all.

Know when the answer is no.

Untrained students should not insert themselves into rescue, clinical care, or family crises. They can study those contexts through the archive, then choose a local action that does not require them to be heroes. Disaster-response learning on this site is historical. It is not a current deployment order.

A week-before checklist.

• The cause brief is one page and has a named adult.
• Everyone on the team can say the task in one sentence.
• Image rules are written, including when the camera stays in the bag.
• If money will move, two people and a paper trail are named.
• If travel is involved, lodging, contacts, and a leave-early plan are written.
• The team has read the matching archive story as study, not as a script for arrival.

Preparation also includes rest. A student who has not slept is more likely to take a photograph they should not take, or to treat local staff as extras. Build a stop rule into the plan: who the student tells, and how they leave the task without being mocked.

If the only exciting part of the plan is the destination, rewrite the plan until the work is visible. volunteer& is an archive and a method. It is not a booking engine.
