A service-learning shelf for schools.

Teachers can run a complete unit from this domain: six stories, six films, an auction history, preparation, ethics, and reflection. The unit should end in student work that a partner could recognise, not in a mood board.

Suggested outcomes.

• Students can explain one humanitarian or civic issue with sources.
• Students can separate observation from interpretation in writing.
• Students can design a small, supervised action and report it honestly.
• Students can state what they are not qualified to do.

Assessment without theatre.

Grade the brief, the sourcing, the completed task, and the handoff note. Do not grade tears. Do not require public posting of student faces next to archive images of distress.

Fuller notes sit in school service programs and partners. Safeguarding is mandatory reading for staff, not optional enrichment.

How to timetable the six stories.

Do not assign all six films in one homework burst. Displacement, coastal disaster, two earthquake contexts, hospice care, and long-term environmental harm are different problems. A class that copies one worksheet onto every page has not read them. Pair refugee-camp with language and documentation. Pair tsunami-area, Wenchuan, and Ya’an with preparedness and the difference between rescue and recovery. Pair Kalighat with boundaries. Pair Chernobyl with the ethics of looking at abandoned places.

The original photographs and MP4s stay in place so the unit has primary material. Students should cite the page, keep captions, and say when they are studying an archive rather than reporting their own fieldwork. Assess the brief and the handoff, not the volume of feeling in a presentation.

If the school also hosts an auction.

Treat the Charity Auction archive as civic education: item stories, verification, public speaking, and a written report. Do not set a fundraising leaderboard that pressures families. Do not attach a live appeal to a historical disaster film unless a present-day verified organisation is named in a separate sentence.

Staff remain responsible for ratios, permissions, and insurance. volunteer& can be the reading list. It cannot be the school’s safeguarding policy.
